Tributes to a ‘very popular’ 16-year-old man killed in an accident after a police chase

A teenager who died in a terror accident in Stalybridge has been named locally as Shae Marlow.

The 16-year-old was driving a VW Golf that hit a wall on Wakefield Road at 6.30pm on Tuesday (November 3).

Police were called in for reports of an Ambleside robbery in the area shortly after 6pm.

Officers began following a vehicle they believed was involved in the incident.

The car, which Shae was driving, crashed into a wall shortly after the chase began.

Emergency services came, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital by paramedics, where he remains in serious condition.

Tributes from friends and family reached Shae, believed to be from Stalybridge, after news of her death broke.

A relative, who put flowers in the place, told the MEN: “He was a very popular boy. He was well known around here. His mother and father are in pieces, he was very loyal.”

A friend wrote on Facebook: “RIP Shae Marlow, such a young and polite boy, always greeted me with a cheeky smile on her face, my heart goes out to her family.

Another said: “Heartbroken by the news. RIP Shae Marlow, one of the kindest guys I ever met. Sending my love to everyone.

Another friend wrote: “RIP Shae. I never failed to put a smile on my face, I will love and miss you brother. Rest easy boy.”

A close friend of Shae’s has set up a gofundme page to raise money for her funeral, and it has raised nearly £ 2,000.

The incident has been referred to the GMP Professional Standards Branch and the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

Wakefield Road was closed in both directions from Printworks Road to Souracre Fold on Tuesday night.

The scene of the accident is around a curve, and a wall appears to have been damaged with wear marks after the incident.

An IOPC spokesperson said: “We have started an independent investigation into the actions of the police prior to a collision in Stalybridge in which, sadly, the driver of a 16-year-old car was killed and another 16-year-old was seriously injured.

“We were notified by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) that around 6.30pm on Tuesday November 3 at Wakefield Road, a police vehicle had followed a car and shortly after discovered that it had crashed near the junction with Printworks Road.

“Our investigators are assisting the scene of the collision and post-incident procedures.” Our thoughts are with the families of the two 16-year-olds and all those affected. “
