The Foreign Secretary told Sky News anchor Kay Burley that he is confident that a free trade deal between the UK and the US can be reached after Brexit. Raab rejected the Sky News host’s suggestion that Joe Biden is less likely to deal with Britain because of the problem surrounding the Irish border.

Ms Burley said: “Brexit is of the utmost importance to the UK.

“As a result, it depends on who is in charge of the trade deal that we can get.

“Mr Biden seems to be much more reluctant to deal with the UK, especially because of what is happening with the Irish border.”

Raab replied: “I really don’t think that’s correct, every time I go to Washington I see politicians from all sides of Congress and I’m sure the relationship will be in good shape.

“I am sure there is an excellent free trade agreement to be made, there has been a lot of progress so far.

“The UK-US relationship, regardless of individuals, has a foundation and a history of shared values, economic ties and cooperative security interests.

“I am very confident that we will have an even stronger relationship in the future.

“I’m not worried about the relationship.

“The contours of opportunities and risks always change a little bit, but that needs to be contrasted with the context of this foundation and this broader set of interests that are so strong.”

Raab said he was “very confident that regardless of whether a Republican or Democrat wins, the British-American relationship is in very good shape.”

The Foreign Secretary later attacked the EU, claiming that Brussels had failed to honor its commitments to the Good Friday Agreement.

He said: “The UK’s position is that we have been clear all along that there is really no threat to the Good Friday Agreement.

“We have unilaterally said that we would never put infrastructure on the border. The EU has not made that position clear.”

DO NOT MISS

However, the shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy, has called for a “restart” of relations between Britain and the United States.

She told Sky News: “It is really clear that there is a lot at stake for Britain and whoever wins, I think it is that the UK government has to restart its relationship with the US.

“The last four years have not produced a profit for Britain, while Donald Trump has made it very clear that he is defending American interests, our Government has not done the same.

“Whatever the outcome, relations between the United Kingdom and the United States will have to be restarted.”
