Demographic changes
Rapid demographic change across the state could work in Joe Biden’s favor and give the party a solid foothold.
Urban areas traditionally favor Democrats, while rural voters tend to back Republicans. In 2016, Trump won 227 out of 254 Texas counties, while Democrats won Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso and Austin.
For decades, the balance between urban and rural Texas has not had a major impact on its overall political leanings, but urban areas have recently begun to command a larger share of the state’s total vote.
In 1968, metropolitan areas accounted for 52 percent, and grew to 60 percent in 1996. Now, the 27 counties account for 69 percent. The people behind the statistics are increasingly likely to vote Democrats.
Recent census estimates also indicate that the proportion of white residents in Houston has dropped to less than 25 percent, with a growing Latino population possibly translating into more liberal support.
