Twitter has permanently suspended the account of conspiracy theorist David Icke.

A spokesperson for the social media platform said Icke had violated its rules regarding coronavirus misinformation.

The move follows YouTube and Facebook’s decision to terminate Icke’s accounts in early May for the same reason.

The 68-year-old former footballer has made controversial unproven claims about the virus on various internet platforms, including a discredited theory that it is linked to the deployment of the 5G mobile network.

Famous doctors, such as Dr. Christian Jessen and former junior physician Adam Kay, have called on social media to remove Icke from their platforms.

They are backed by the Center for the Fight Against Digital Hate (CCDH), which claims that their conspiracies on Covid-19 have been viewed more than 30 million times.

CCDH had asked Facebook-owned Twitter and Instagram to permanently ban Icke and his content from their platforms.

Countdown host Rachel Riley celebrated Icke’s departure from the popular website, tweeting: “UK’s leading hate monger / conspiratorial con man has finally been removed from Twitter.”

Icke’s Instagram page, which has 212,000 followers, is still active and posted a video over the weekend of him telling a large crowd in Birmingham to “choose freedom.” The video has been viewed more than 85,000 times.
