The first series of polls closed when voters in the US elections decide between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.
The candidates have proclaimed that the other is totally incapable of handling the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and of dealing with economic equity and racial justice across the country.
The polls are in favor of Biden, but could Trump once again defy the odds and keep his spot in the Oval Office for another term?
Here are the results, as they come live across the country.
These charts will be continually updated as the results appear.
US Election Results: Trump vs Biden
Map of US Election Results By State
The night began with predictable victories for each candidate, with Donald Trump winning Kentucky and Joe Biden taking Vermont.
Biden has taken an early lead, but, with the polls still open in most states, it’s still anyone’s game.
It’s too early to call Georgia, the transitional state with the earliest voting cut-off time.
Results from all 50 states will continue to appear for the next several hours, with either Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump declared the winners once they have obtained 270 electoral votes.
Millions of voters put aside concerns about Covid-19, and some long lines, to go in person, joining 102 million compatriots who voted days or weeks before, a record number that represented 73% of total votes in the 2016 presidential election..
While speaking on a noon visit to his campaign headquarters, Trump told reporters: “Winning is easy. Losing is never easy, not for me it isn’t. ‘
The president left open the possibility of addressing the nation Tuesday night, even if a winner had not been determined.
Mr. Biden had scheduled an evening speech from his hometown of Delaware, but, hours before scheduled to deliver it, he said: ‘If there’s anything to talk about tonight, I’ll talk about it. If not, I’ll wait until the votes are counted the next day.
He continued: “I’m superstitious about predicting what the outcome will be until it happens … but I’m hopeful.”
“It’s so uncertain … you can’t think of an election in the recent past where so many states were at stake.”
