Diogo Jota is winning applause from all directions after a fantastic start in Liverpool.

The Reds’ summer signing had scored three goals in one week to seal important victories against Sheffield United, FC Midtjylland and West Ham United.

His performances earned him a starting spot against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night at the expense of Roberto Firmino.

Jota was quick to reward Jurgen Klopp’s faith with a double in the first 35 minutes.

The first, a good shot after showing great strength to contain his marker before whipping home a second after controlling a looping cross.

In a fluid forward three, Jota was a constant threat in the first half, further strengthening his claim to disrupt Liverpool’s ever-present previous trio.

After the first, Gary Linkeker was quick to underline his quality and the strength in depth he has added to the Liverpool squad.

He said: “What a tremendous signing Jota is proving. Another lovely ending. I wouldn’t have thought you could improve. @LFC s opposite 3, but … ”

Before adding: “Jota is hotter than the lotta.”

In fact, Lineker has summed up what all Liverpool and Klopp fans must be thinking as he ponders how to get his three regular forwards and Jota into the same XI, or whether one should be missed.

Speaking to BT Sport before the game, former Liverpool forward Peter Crouch praised the former Wolves player.

“It has put Firmino under tremendous pressure, hasn’t it?

“He’s come in and he’s got three goals and he’s playing fantastically well. We’ve been discussing before that maybe that could be a long-term plan.”

“Maybe he’s playing Salah, or Mane, in the middle. He’s come in and he’s done amazing. What Klopp seems to do is buy someone, that not many people are looking at, and improve it.”

“It seems like it’s gone and it’s going to get better.”
