Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona will undergo surgery for a subdural hematoma in a few hours, local media reported.
A source also told Reuters that the 60-year-old will have an operation.
A subdural hematoma is a serious condition in which blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain. It is usually caused by a head injury.
Maradona has been hospitalized in Argentina since Monday night for anemia and dehydration.
However, his personal physician said earlier in the day that his condition had improved.
Dr. Leopoldo Luque also told reporters: “It is not well psychologically and that has an impact on their physical well-being. “
One of Maradona’s representatives said that the former footballer has been “a very sad week” and “did not want to eat.”
The star currently directs the Argentine First Division Gymnastics and Fencing team, and attended the club’s match against the Board of Trustees on his birthday, receiving a plaque and cake.
But he left before the end of the first half, raising questions about his health.
Dr. Luque said Maradona “had no energy” and his birthday “complicates it.”
And he added: “My idea is to keep it hydrated for three days, see the evolution and adjust the medication.
“Diego is a person who is sometimes excellent and sometimes not so. He could be 10,000 times better, and bringing him here helps him.
“It is very difficult to be Maradona.”
The former Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli player is in a regular room at the clinic and can choose to go home whenever he wants, said Dr. Luque.
The footballer has suffered from other periods of poor health over the years.
In January 2019, he was admitted to the hospital with internal bleeding in his stomach.
