A substitute teacher who tested positive for Covid-19 continued to teach, despite knowing she was infected, the school principal told parents angrily.
Five classes he taught at Kitchener Primary School in Canton, Cardiff, are now self-isolating, affecting 150 students.
The substitute teacher was covering teachers who were absent the week before midterm.
Principal Reena Patel sent a video to parents and caregivers on Monday, November 2, informing them of the “devastating news.”
Ms. Patel said: “She kept coming to the school and did not tell us that she had been tested or received the results. Unfortunately, I just found out.
“I’m disappointed, I’m angry, I’m absolutely devastated why people wouldn’t do the right thing.
“Your children are my priority and they always will be.”
Since the substitute teacher tested positive the week before the midterm break, the five classes only need to be isolated until Thursday, November 5, and can return to school on Friday, November 6.
Ms. Patel said: “If your child has not developed symptoms before this time, it is highly unlikely that they will.
“I am absolutely devastated to break this news. I am very sorry this happened. “
The school has not named a substitute teacher.
A spokesperson for the Cardiff council said: “A substitute teacher tested positive for Covid-19 at Kitchener Elementary School.
“Five staff members and 150 students are self-isolating on the advice of Public Health Wales, after they were identified as close contacts of the confirmed case, and will return to school at the end of this week.”
