Lewis Hamilton says his teammate Valtteri Bottas doesn’t get enough credit for how well he’s driving.
Bottas has been Hamilton’s closest rival for the championship this year. He is the only driver left who can beat Hamilton for the title, but he is 85 points behind with only 104 available in the remaining races.
“Valtteri doesn’t get his due credit because he does an incredible job,” Hamilton told Ziggo Sport. “He is an incredibly fast driver.
“I think he’s better than a lot of the field that is here, not just in his driving, but more in his mental attitude and focus. Because being a driver isn’t just about driving, it’s not just about practicing. It’s about how you compose, how you attract and elevate the people around you and he’s great at that. “
Bottas has achieved pole position four times this year. Though Hamilton won the other nine times, the gap between the two was a tenth of a second or less on five of those occasions.
“When I look back at those times, they were too close,” Hamilton said. “They weren’t good enough because I think I have a certain amount of extra time on me.
“But honestly, it’s never giving up, never believing it’s over. It’s about feeling, pushing to the limit and trying to put all the puzzle pieces together quickly.
“When you go into practice, you basically have a new puzzle and the pieces are all over the place and you only have a selected amount of time to put all the puzzle pieces in place.
“When you get to qualifying, sometimes you have half the puzzle done, sometimes you have everything finished, sometimes you have less. And then you just have to put it all together and hope it comes together. And I’m good at both. “
