MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes has criticized Fred and Scott McTominay while praising Thomas Partey.

The Arsenal defensive midfielder was outstanding as he scored the center of the park in the Gunners’ crucial 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba’s sloppy foul on Héctor Bellerin allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score from the penalty spot.

And while the Frenchman’s mistake ensured another disappointing afternoon, it was Fred and McTominay who received the brunt of the criticism from Scholes.

Speaking after the game, he told Sky Sports: “To be honest, it’s as poor as I’ve seen Manchester United at Old Trafford.

“You have to give Arsenal credit, it was very good, but on the other hand you have to expect more from United and especially from the two midfielders.

“I said that at halftime if you are going to bring out the best in you, the most creative players who can score goals with the ball, then the two in midfield must have some kind of possession and some kind of control, but the quality in both of them.

“They played as central halves, not central midfielders.”

He had opposing views on Partey, who joined the North London team for £ 45 million on Atletico Madrid’s deadline day.

Scholes added: “He’s a complete midfielder.

“You don’t see many players like that these days.

“Midfielders attack midfielders or hold midfielders, but the job of a midfielder is to do everything.

“You have to contribute everything and today he did a brilliant job in all departments.”

Roy Keane also highly praised Partey and compared him to Gunners legend Patrick Vieira.

He said: “When you see a player live, that’s when you can judge.

“The more I look at him, the more I wish he was in Manchester United’s midfield.

“I think this kid has a chance to match what Patrick [Vieira] used to do.

“I wish we had him in United’s midfield. He could definitely be the successor to Vieira’s Arsenal.”
