A train that passed through a stop block was saved from a dramatic fall into the water below, thanks to a sculpture of a whale’s tail.
The subway train balanced on its rear fins, known as “fins,” 10 meters above the ground near the Dutch port city of Rotterdam.
The accident happened shortly before midnight and woke up people living in nearby houses, but fortunately, the train conductor came out of the wound.
A nearby resident said: “It was a noise that lasted two or three seconds.”
“I realized there was something in the queue … I thought ‘something very strange is going on here.’
Authorities were forced to tell tourists to stay away after dozens of people ignored coronavirus restrictions to visit the place where workers were trying to remove the train.
Despite this, some 50 people remained as authorities worked against the strong winds.
“A team of experts is investigating how we can make it safe and remove it. It is complicated,” said a spokeswoman for the local security authority.
There were no passengers on the train when it crashed into the stop barriers at the end of the station, which is the last stop on the line.
The driver was able to get off the train himself and was taken to the hospital for a check-up.
The Whale Tails sculpture is made of polyester and is the work of Maarten Struijs. The tails were placed in the water at the end of the subway tracks in 2002.
