James Bond star Sir Sean Connery’s widow, who died at the age of 90, described her final moments as she paid heartfelt tribute to her husband.

It was revealed yesterday that Hollywood legend Sean died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas surrounded by loved ones.

Now his wife Micheline, 91, has recounted how the actor suffered from dementia in his last months and died “in peace.”

Sir Sean, who rose to fame as the original James Bond in 1962’s Dr No, hadn’t been seen publicly since 2017.

His second wife, Micheline, said his dementia “took its toll” and that she was with him in his last moments.

Micheline, who was married to the Oscar-winning star for 45 years, added that he was a “magnificent model of a man.”

The Moroccan-French painter told MailOnline: “It wasn’t life for him. He couldn’t express himself lately. At least he died in his sleep and it was so peaceful. He slipped away. It was what he wanted.

“He had dementia and it took a toll on him. He got his dying wish to escape without a problem.

“He was beautiful and we had a wonderful life together. He was a model of a man. It will be very difficult without him, I know. But he couldn’t last forever and he left in peace.”

Raised near poverty, a young Connery worked as a coffin polisher, milkman, and lifeguard before his love of bodybuilding helped launch a career in acting.

After Bond propelled him to international stardom, Sir Sean enjoyed more than 40 years in the industry during which he won an Oscar, two Baftas and three Golden Globes.

The proud Scotsman was also knighted in 2000 for his services to dramatic film, which he accepted wearing a full Highland costume.

Following the announcement of his death, politicians and fellow actors have paid tribute to the star.

The official James Bond Twitter account shared a heartfelt statement from producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who said they were “devastated” by the news.

They praised Connery for taking the world by storm with his ‘brave and resourceful’ portrayal of the Secret Service agent, acknowledging that the franchise would never have taken off if not for his star quality.
