Donald Trump’s hopes for a second term as president of the United States seemed to fade last night, even his closest advisers admitted: ‘The only person in the White House who believes that Trump can win is Trump himself.
As the president embarked on a frenzied 14-stop tour of key battlefield states across the United States, the latest polls put Democratic rival Joe Biden eight points ahead with a record 90 million votes already cast. A Fox News poll put Biden ahead 52 percent to 44.
However, the victory of either candidate will come down to a small number of ‘changing states’, including Florida and Pennsylvania, where Trump and Biden run side by side.
Under the US system, in which states are assigned a number of ‘electoral votes’ and candidates need a total of 270 to win, it is possible for a candidate to win the popular vote and yet lose.

A record 150 million Americans are expected to cast their vote at the end of a campaign dominated by Trump’s handling of the pandemic and violent protests sparked by the killings of unarmed black men and women by police.
Cities from Los Angeles to Chicago to New York have had police licenses canceled, and the governors of many states, including California, have the National Guard ready in case violence breaks out.
The Pentagon has a plan to send troops to the streets of Washington DC in the event that protesters rally if Trump loses. Armed militia groups have threatened to disrupt the elections.
Unless a candidate wins by an overwhelming majority, the result is unlikely to be known Tuesday night. Biden appeared yesterday with former President Barack Obama at a rally in Michigan. Music legend Stevie Wonder was scheduled to perform at another Biden rally last night. Biden, 77, has been dubbed ‘Sleepy Joe’ by Trump, 74, and has made frequent mistakes during the campaign. There have been subtle signs that Trump is preparing for life after the White House.
Last week, he canceled a ‘victory party’ scheduled to be held at his Trump hotel in Washington DC. He told his assistants it was because he felt “superstitious.”
His son-in-law Jared Kushner, married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, has also met with media companies and major investment banks to discuss a possible ‘Trump TV’ network.
