Cancello stars for City as Sheff Utd’s weak right-back bodes well for Chelsea

Sheff Utd 0-1 Man City

  • Goals: Kyle Walker (£ 6 million)
  • Attend: Kevin De Bruyne (£ 11.5 million)
  • Extra points: Walker x3, João Cancelo x2 (£ 5.4 million), Aymeric Laporte x1 (£ 6.0 million)

CULTURE CANCELLATION

João Cancelo (£ 5.4m) is fast becoming Manchester City’s key defender ahead of his swing in Week 10 of Gameweek, as he staged a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

While Kyle walker (£ 6.0 million) emerged with a loot of 15 points, thanks to his spectacular first-half goal, it was Pep Guardiola’s left-back who suggested a more sustainable outing.

Since making his first Premier League start at that position on Gameweek 5, Cancelo is still not blank, averaging seven points per game.

In that time, the Portuguese international has accumulated two clean sheets and, although he has only managed to give an assist, it has not been due to lack of attempts.

In the first half alone against the Blades, Cancelo created more chances than any Manchester City defense in a Premier League game since February 2012. That impressive tally was a big reason he was able to secure two bonus points despite do not record attack bounces.

DEFENSIVE CONSISTENCY

However, Fantasy coaches may want to wait before going all in with Cancelo or any of Manchester City’s defense.

They face Liverpool (at home) and Spurs (away) in the next two weeks of play, two teams that will likely be difficult to contain.

Gameweek 10 seems like the right time for Cancelo, with home games against Burnley, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion between then and Gameweek 13.

Waiting until then can help too Aymeric laporte (£ 6.0 million) and Ruben Dias (£ 5.5 million) settle together as a core duo.

The trip to Sheffield United was only the second time this season that Guardiola has been able to start the two players, but there are many promises to have them both together.

2019/20 was a sub-standard year for the Citizens in terms of defensive performance, and their coach has already highlighted that consistency in central defender will make a big difference this season.

“(Laporte + Dias) both are playing very well. They are guys to give us consistency. We fought a lot last year to have two centrals (every week). This year, we will need everyone because with this amount of games it is impossible to play both in all the games.

Scare right

Cancel and Raheem Sterling (£ 11.6 million) had considerable freedom on Saturday as they took full advantage of Sheffield United’s weak right flank.

Between game weeks 1 and 6, the Blades conceded more chances on their side of the field than any other team in the Premier League and that trend continued at Bramall Lane.

As you can see from the breakdown of the match data, there was an uneven distribution of opportunities given by Chris Wilder’s men. They allowed 10 opportunities, of which 70% were built on the right side.

While Sheffield United’s issues here may have helped Cancello’s numbers, they show more relevance to Fantasy when examining Gameweek 8 props.

The Blades will travel to Chelsea next weekend and, if Wilder has done little to prop up George baldockon the court side (£ 5.3 million) at that point, Ben chilwell (£ 5.9 million) and Timo Werner (£ 9.3 million) take advantage.

FRONT AND CENTER

Ferran Torres (£ 6.9 million) can be considered unlucky for not having left Bramall Lane without some attacking returns.

Having scored as a center forward in Champions League week, the Manchester City number 21 had a chance to reprise that role in Week 7.

“It’s a new position for him, but he did well (against Marseille). We have other people in the middle but the forward position is the most difficult. He did very well and we tried again. “- Pep Guardiola

Torres was the main beneficiary of Cancelo’s loitering runs and incessant opportunity creation, as he had three golden opportunities to score during the game. Aaron Ramsdale (£ 4.9 million) proving to be the same every time.

However, it remains to be seen whether the £ 6.9 million midfielder can offer long-term appeal as an out-of-position asset, with Gabriel Jesus (£ 9.3 million) approaching a return to fitness.

That should hopefully spell the end of Sterling having to replace up front as well. He was assigned that role in the last 10 minutes of Gameweek 7 as Phil Foden (6.6 million pounds sterling) replaced Torres.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham; Lowe (McGoldrick 81 ‘), Osborn (Lundstram 55’), Ampadu (Norwood 65 ‘), Berge, Baldock; Brewster, McBurnie.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancello, Laporte, Dias, Walker; Rodrigo, De Bruyne, B Silva; Sterling, Torres (Foden 81 ′), Mahrez (Gündogan 85 ′).
