Nicola Sturgeon has announced that no part of Scotland will be placed at the most difficult level of lockdown under a new framework that will take effect from next week.
North and South Lanarkshire will be located at level three, similar to the current restrictions, along with Glasgow and most of the west of Scotland.
Dundee has moved to level three along with Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian, while Fife remains at level two.
But the Prime Minister warned today that she could not rule out a return to a national lockdown in the future if the number of positive cases in Scotland did not start to fall in the coming weeks.
For now, a national ban on indoor domestic gatherings remains in place, but could be eased in rural areas next month.
Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Sturgeon said: “Given the fragile situation we are facing, and the fact that we are migrating to this new system for the first time, we are taking a deliberately cautious approach today.”
“At present, we do not consider it safe or prudent to place any part of the country at the zero benchmark.
“However, if we see continued progress, I hope that will change in the coming weeks.”
No area of the council has been placed at the zero level, known as the baseline, but the SNP leader said she hopes some parts of the country will be able to achieve this in the coming weeks.
“Our goal is that these restrictions, especially at level three, are in effect for the shortest time possible,” he told the MSPs.
“So if an area is at level three, our goal collectively, among those who live there, the local authority, local health services and local businesses, should be to reduce it to level two and then level one, not to allow move to level four, which we will use when transmission is extremely high and the NHS’s ability to cope is compromised. “
The new restrictions will go into effect at 6 a.m. on Monday.
