The Met Office has issued a “life threatening” weather advisory across Scotland today, with an additional advisory issued for the weekend.
Torrential rains and potential flooding are forecast in areas across the country.
The yellow alert has been in place since 9 am this morning (Thursday) and will continue until 11.59 pm tonight.
A short respite is expected on Friday, although heavy rains are still expected, and the weather warnings will go back into effect on Saturday morning at 6 a.m. and last until 11:59 p.m.
The alert covering Thursday was issued for Dumfries and Galloway and parts of Lothian and the borders, as well as the Strathclyde regions.
A Met Office forecast predicts: “Periods of heavy rain are expected to develop across south-west Scotland on Thursday morning and into the afternoon.”
“It is possible for 40 to 50mm to accumulate, especially in the Galloway Hills and North Ayrshire. The rain will gradually decrease overnight.”
The weekend’s advisories cover most of the country, spanning Central, Tayside and Fife, Highlands and Eilean Siar, South West Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde.
A forecast from the Met Office predicts: “There is a possibility of very unstable weather over the coming weekend, especially in the south, central and west of Scotland with periods of heavy rain until Saturday and after a respite during night, Sunday. The rain will fall on already saturated ground increasing the risk of floods. “
Experts also predict warn of:
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses will flood and damage some buildings.
- There is a small chance that running water or deep flooding could endanger life.
- When a flood occurs, there is a small chance of delays or cancellations of train and bus services.
- Splashes and flooding can cause difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a small possibility of power outages and loss of other services in some homes and businesses.
