Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Alex Telles tested positive for coronavirus.

The Brazilian defender, who joined the Red Devils from FC Porto on the transfer deadline, made his debut in a 2-1 win over PSG in the Champions League last week.

But he was not on the squad for the team that drew 0-0 with Chelsea on Saturday, or the one that beat RB Leipzig 5-0 on Wednesday.

And talking to MUTV after his team’s victory against Leipzig, Solskjaer confirmed that a positive COVID-19 test is the reason for Telles’ absence.

Since the player now needs to isolate himself for a period of time, he will miss more upcoming matches, and will certainly not be involved in either Sunday’s game against Arsenal or United’s Champions League third game against Istanbul Başakşehir la next week.

Alex Telles has not played since his debut against PSG

A statement from United on Wednesday evening read: “Ole confirms Alex Telles has tested positive for COVID-19. We wish him a speedy recovery and a speedy return to the group.”

Solskjaer confirmed that Telles was showing no symptoms, and it remains to be seen exactly when he will be able to return to action.

The news comes after an enormously satisfying night for United, after a hat-trick by Marcus Rashford helped them defeat Leipzig.

Telles will now have to isolate

On the game, Solskjaer said: “They make you work, Leipzig. High pressure, against pressure, intensity, we had to dig deep and work hard for each other.

“The spaces are opened when you are winning. Today was a day in which we had to rest a few, this season is relentless, we could use the template.

“This group is coming together. We have added some quality players, more quality you have and spirit that you have the best chance of a performance.”
