Jamie Carragher joked that he is avoiding Jurgen Klopp after he criticized his suggestion that Liverpool had made a “mistake”.

Carragher spoke about Liverpool’s injury issues on Sky Sports shortly after Virgil van Dijk tore his ACL in the Merseyside derby.

The former Reds center-back admitted that Liverpool should have signed a new center-back for such a situation in the summer transfer window.

And he suggested that they had made a mistake in not doing so.

“Dejan Lovren left and they didn’t replace him, so they only have three centers and one of them, Joel Matip, is always injured,” Carragher said.

“Now there are question marks about Joe Gomez. So there is no question that Liverpool had to go big in the transfer market.”

Klopp responded to the accusation at his next press conference, saying that it is comments like this from the experts that explain why they “don’t do this job.”

“We started the season with three centers plus Fabinho as a cover and some youngsters,” Klopp said. “It’s difficult to have four world-class center halves.

“If someone wants to tell us we made a mistake, I think Carragher already mentioned it, there are some reasons why they don’t do this job.”

Klopp was unhappy with some of Carragher’s comments.

Carragher responded to the comment on Twitter, noting that Klopp had misinterpreted his words.

He wrote: “Not once this season have I said it was a mistake that Klopp didn’t buy a center-back for the exact reason he says.”

On Tuesday night, Carragher was providing an analysis on Liverpool’s Champions League win over Midtjylland.

Fabinho, who has been replacing as central defender, was forced to leave the field with an injury, adding to Klopp’s defensive woes.

Carragher was asked if he had reconciled with Klopp after their little disagreement.

He told CBS Sports: “Well it’s right on my right shoulder [as Carragher is stood on the sidelines of the Anfield pitch].

“I’m just being careful. He’s 6ft 5, right? Have you seen his size? Why do you think I’m standing on the Kop?”
