It’s a gloomy time in the UK with the COVID pandemic refusing to weaken and the days are getting shorter as we approach winter.
So when a thread of tweets appeared, announcing that Woolworths was returning to the main streets of the country, it sparked hope that Christmas could be saved after all.
@UKWoolworths tweet claimed to be “here to save 2020”, adding: “Woolworths is returning to its main street as a physical store!
“A couple of legal things to work out, but we’re in full steam at Woolworths headquarters.”
Fans responded to the news with nostalgic tweets fondly recalling searching for their favorite treats in the store’s beloved pic ‘n’ mix.
In its heyday, the High Street institution had sold goods, including toys, household items, and garden supplies.
But it closed its 815 stores between 2008 and 2009, burdened with debt and abandoned in a rapidly evolving retail world.
Some 27,000 people were left without work, and in the following years many of the stores were bought by discount chains.
The idea of its revival, seemingly in the form of three test shops late next year, brought joy to many.
There was only one problem: it may not be that simple.
Woolworths Ltd is now a dormant company registered at the same address as its owners – The Very Group.
Very, formerly Shop Direct, owns the trademark, so even if the pick n mix favorite came back, it couldn’t use the Woolworths name.
A closer look at the @UKWoolworths Twitter account revealed that his first tweet had been less than 24 hours prior and the account had not been verified by Twitter like most well-known companies.
The link you gave as your website could not be accessed, and the attempts only resulted in news that “server IP address could not be found”.
The account’s tweets were awkward, too: In one tweet, the store was called “Woolsworths” twice.
When someone asked why the website was broken, the response blamed a “huge increase in activity”, adding that Very’s website was not affected “as we are two desperate companies”, rather than separate companies. .
A spokesperson for The Very Group told Sky News: “We own the Woolworths brand in the UK. The UKWoolworths Twitter account is not connected to The Very Group.”
