A former British paratrooper fell 40 meters into the sea from a helicopter in an attempt to break the world record for jumps without a parachute.
John Bream was taken to the hospital for examination after the jump after he awkwardly landed in the water and briefly fell unconscious.
The 34-year-old from Havant, Hampshire, is believed to have fallen into the water at about 80 mph off Hayling Island on Monday after falling the equivalent of nine stories.
Nicknamed “The Flying Fish,” Bream was trying to break the world record for jumping out of a plane into the water without a parachute to raise money for service personnel mental health charities.
Two safety divers and a support boat were available to assist Bream in the water immediately after landing.
He was seen walking around and chatting with paramedics as they checked him before being taken to the hospital.
Bream said he was attempting the feat of “raising awareness and helping prevent veteran suicide” and “showing that veterans can still achieve brilliance.”
He said the bravery required for the jump was nothing compared to the bravery displayed by troops on the front line, and said he hoped the event would motivate veterans in the country.
All money raised by Bream will be donated to the All Call Signs and Support Our Paras charities.
Despite its feat, Guinness World Records did not immediately confirm it as a success.
A spokesperson said: “We were informed of John Bream’s attempt today and we wish him a speedy recovery. Due to the nature of this activity, we only accept requests from experienced specialists or rely on research to verify the record retrospectively. “
