David Coulthard has questioned why “true champion” Lewis Hamilton has not received the knighthood like other sports stars after his record win in Portugal on Sunday.
Hamilton claimed his 92nd victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix in style with a 25-second margin to beat Michael Schumacher’s record for the most wins in Formula One.
But despite all his success over the years, he has yet to be knighted like other British stars, including Andy Murray, who was knighted for his services to tennis and charity in 2016.

When asked by BBC Radio 5 Live If Hamilton deserves the same credit, Coulthard said: ‘100 percent. I don’t understand why so many world championships in his career (he has not been awarded the knighthood).
‘He is a world ambassador for Great Britain.
“We have a true world championship in Formula 1. We have Lewis there, proudly holding the Union Jack over his head. Everywhere and at all times you have the opportunity to do it.

‘So does anyone know a reason why? Have you done something that would make him unacceptable under current regulations to make him a knight?
Because I think you deserve it more than others.
Despite all his triumphs, Hamilton has often divided opinion and has not been universally loved in the same way as tennis hero Murray, with critics accusing him of looking away from the race track after stepping into world of celebrities.
But the host has been using his social media platforms to raise awareness of important causes and has spoken openly on various topics, including Black Lives Matter and the environment.
He asked his fellow drivers to join him in “kneeling” before each race this season. Some of his peers were less willing to kneel for the cause.

Hamilton then accused the reluctant handful of being an accessory to racism unless they spoke out and proved otherwise.
She also paid tribute to Breonna Taylor at the Tuscany Grand Prix by wearing a jersey calling for the arrest of the officers who killed her.
The 35-year-old was facing an investigation over the ‘political’ jersey, but the FIA later confirmed that no action would be taken.
