An EastEnders director has been fired from the set after reporting for work prior to a positive covid-19 diagnosis.

Joe Nugent, a first assistant director of the show, got tested for coronavirus after feeling unwell over the weekend of October 10, The Sun reports.

Despite experiencing symptoms of the virus, Nugent went to work as normal on the BBC’s Elstree program in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, for the following Monday and Tuesday.

The director only notified his colleagues after his test result came back positive Tuesday night, after two days spent between the crew and the soap opera cast.

Later, a cast member tested positive for coronavirus following Nugent’s violation of the covid rule.

A source told The Sun how a head of the program had written to staff saying: ‘You will all have heard that we had an active Covid case on the site.

“This should serve as a reminder that keeping ourselves and our colleagues safe is an ongoing situation and a shared responsibility.”

Although the EastEnders cast member who subsequently tested positive for the virus has not been named, Danny Dyer was ruled out with a series of negative coronavirus tests after the scare.

The cast of EastEnders were said to have nearly staged a 'riot' over the news that a positive case of covid-19 had occurred on set.

A source from EastEnders told The Sun that actors approaching the at-risk age group had been “furious” and “disappointed.”

They added: ‘There was talk of a riot. They gave him the boot, in part to calm the cast members. ‘

Since filming resumed in June, all staff members have been regularly screened for COVID-19.

MailOnline has contacted Joe Nugent for comment.

Last week, EastEnders’ new £ 87 million set came one step closer to completion, as the builders finished work on the redesigned Queen Vic pub alongside a host of other businesses on Tuesday.

The snapshots show the big-budget ensemble is not far from being glimpsed on screens, with the tavern freshly painted with a new take on its iconic sign.

Work on the EastEnders pool has been ongoing during the COVID-19 pandemic and, despite being one step closer to completion, it is still not expected to be completed until 2023.
