PAUL POGBA reportedly left international football after comments by French President Emmanuel Macron, which alleged that Islam was the source of international terrorism.
The Manchester United star reportedly made the decision following Friday’s remarks from his country’s leader.
And the French government’s decision to honor the teacher who posted offensive images of the Prophet Muhammad, who reportedly resented Pogba, is also said to be behind the move.
That’s according to various Middle Eastern news sources, but neither the 27-year-old nor the French Football Association have commented on the speculation.
The United Pogba ace’s alleged decision comes in the wake of the beheading of 47-year-old teacher Samuel Paty, who was attacked as he was returning home from the high school where he taught in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, 40 kilometers northwest of Paris.
Paty was awarded the French Legion of Honor, the highest decoration awarded by the French state, in recognition of the fact that she died trying to explain the importance of freedom of expression.
Preisdent Macron described the murder as an ‘Islamic terrorist attack’ that claimed the life of the French teacher.
Later he added: “Unity and firmness are the only answers to the monstrosity of Islamist terrorism.”
Pogba’s apparent resignation was published on Sunday on the Arab sports website 195sports.com, which said the decision to give the maestro the Legion of Honor and the comments were the motivation for his decision to stop playing as a French international.
Pogba allegedly considered the decision an insult to himself and to French Muslims, especially since Islam is the second religion in France after Christianity.
Meanwhile, calls are increasing around the world for people to boycott French products in the wake of the president’s comments accusing Muslims of separatism and vowing not to give up cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
Pogba made his international debut in 2013 and then lifted the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He has won 72 international matches and scored ten goals for Les Bleus.
