Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta lamented his team’s charity in front of goal after Leicester City’s 1-0 win at the Emirates.
The Gunners controlled procedures in the first half but couldn’t find a starter, with Alexandre Lacazette particularly guilty of wasting good starts for the hosts.
The Frenchman thought he had broken the deadlock when he headed Kasper Schmeichel from a corner, but the goal was disallowed after Granit Xhaka was called offside.
Jamie Vardy started on the Foxes’ bench but entered the game at the hour mark and found a winner with 15 minutes remaining when Leicester opened Arsenal on a well-crafted play.
“It is very difficult to create chances against ten men behind the ball,” Arteta said.
In those spaces we saw what they did against Manchester City. I was hoping they would, but we had open situations where we should have finished better.
‘It comes down to two or three chances that you’re going to have. When you have those moments you have to take advantage of them and not make mistakes in the back. ‘
Arteta criticized the referee’s decision to annul Lacazette’s first match and the Spaniard says he doesn’t know ‘how the hell’ it was annulled.
“I think the first half we had the game in our hands,” Arteta said.
‘We create enough opportunities to go to the front. We scored a goal that I don’t know how the hell it was canceled.
“The second half was a case of patience and waiting for the right moment against a team that wanted to defend very deep, that had no shots on goal and was just waiting for a mistake to hit you at half-time.
“The moment we made a minimal error with no pressure on the ball trying to get in, they grabbed us with space on our back and we lost the game.”
