Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will have surgery for a hernia problem on Monday and it looks like he will be out for about four weeks.

Shelvey was forced out of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with the Wolves and manager Steve Bruce confirmed after the game at Molineux that he would need surgery.

“It’s a sportsman’s hernia, so we think it could be available after the international break,” Bruce said.

“He was injured taking a free kick in the area last week and it looks like he will have surgery tomorrow in London.”

Shelvey had appeared in every Newcastle Premier League game this season prior to Sunday.

In his absence, a goal from a free kick by Jacob Murphy with one minute remaining earned Bruce’s team a point after Raúl Jiménez had fired the hosts ahead, leaving them 14 on the table.
