He has already won the hearts of the nation in his fight to make sure no child goes hungry, and now Marcus Rashford has also been named our Pride of Britain.

The Manchester United and England striker has received a special recognition award for his tenacious campaign to prevent children from starving during the summer.

He was selected by the judging panel after receiving thousands of nominations for his successful campaign that forced Boris Johnson to take a 180 degree turn.

Marcus’s presentation will be one of the highlights of the awards show, which will be shown on ITV next Sunday.

The modest Marcus simply said, “No way!” upon seeing his Daily Mirror Pride of Britain award.

The awards are organized in association with TSB and he is just one of many inspiring Brits who will be recognized at the event.

But then he added: “Ultimately, no child should miss meals. For me, that should be standard, no matter where you come from. If we see it as the new normal, then we will have come a long way. “

The 22-year-old had spent his time incarcerated fighting on behalf of 200,000 underprivileged children receiving free school meals to force Boris Johnson to change plans to end support over the summer.

Determined to help children like him who had grown up receiving free school meals, he also helped raise £ 20 million to feed another three million people and continues to provide a powerful voice for underprivileged families.

“I attended Pride of Great Britain last year, so I got to see first-hand how deserving the award winners are,” said Marcus.

“I am very honored, but I would like to think that I am receiving this award on behalf of all the incredible people who have selflessly volunteered to support their communities during this pandemic.

“I’ve met a lot of them and I don’t deserve it more than they do.

“Parents who have sacrificed everything to feed their children during this challenging time, people who volunteer at FareShare food banks day after day, people who fight to protect our most vulnerable children every minute of the day.

“It’s those people who really make me proud to be British and really define us as UK.

“So today, I accept this award on behalf of all those who step forward without the need for thanks and praise. I thank each of you.”

The England star was surprised by Ashley Banjo, who presented her with the award, after meeting a young winner, Emmie Narayan-Nicholas, in Manchester last month.

  • The astonishing moment when Marcus receives his award is a highlight of the Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, in association with TSB, which will screen Sunday night on ITV.
