The UK has recorded 19,790 more coronavirus cases and 151 more deaths in the last 24-hour period, new figures show.

Yesterday, 23,012 more COVID-19 infections were reported, compared to 20,530 the day before.

On Saturday, 174 deaths were announced within 28 days of a positive test, down from 224 the day before.

The total number of deaths with coronavirus now it is 44,896.

The NHS head of testing and tracing, Baroness Dido Harding, meanwhile, facing calls to be eliminated from within the Conservative Party.

Sir Bernard Jenkin, who chairs the powerful High-Level MP Liaison Committee, told Sky’s Sophy Ridge that the Test and Trace administration is bloated and confused.

“There is a sense that there is a general lack of strategy that is at the heart of the problem,” said Sir Bernard.

The government of Wales is due to revision its ban on stores from selling “non-essential” items after photos showed books and Christmas decorations removed from sale in stores.

The Cardiff administration has been widely criticized for guidance that certain sections of supermarkets should be “cordoned off or emptied and closed to the public.”

The official reason is to discourage people from spending too much time in stores and being able to spread the virus.

It was also considered unfair that independent retailers were forced to close but supermarkets continued to sell similar items.

And more than a third of doctors believe that the government’s three-tier system will have no impact on efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The research, from the British Medical Association, also raises concerns about the fall and winter period, with more than half of healthcare personnel saying they are “quite anxious” about what is to come.
