‘It’s an absolute pleasure to work with him’ – Chelsea new player Edouard Mendy loves coaching alongside Petr Cech after club legend was listed as emergency cover this season
- Veteran Petr Cech has been listed as emergency cover for Chelsea this season
- Club legend Cech, who is a technical advisor, has come to the aid of the Blues
- Thus, the new kid Edouard Mendy has been training alongside the 38-year-old.
- Mendy says it’s ‘an absolute pleasure’ and is studying Cech every day
Edouard Mendy says that he has been studying Petr Cech, following the remarkable return to training of 38 years.
Cech retired in 2019 and works as a technical advisor at Stamford Bridge, but has been working with Frank Lampard’s side and was included in their 25-man Premier League squad as emergency cover.
It has given the new number one, Mendy, who, like Cech, joined Chelsea from Rennes, the opportunity to see first-hand the standards expected at Stamford Bridge.
Edouard Mendy didn’t expect to train with Petr Cech when he joined Chelsea
“It is an absolute pleasure to work with him every day. The training allows me to see how he works and analyze his game, ”said Mendy. “It is a wonderful advantage for me.”
Cech will not be in the squad to face Manchester United on Saturday, despite the injury preventing Kepa Arrizabalaga. Mendy, who is ready to go, is confident that Chelsea will be able to get by without the veteran this season. “We already have three very good goalkeepers and that should be enough,” he said.
The Senegalese international has overtaken Kepa and Willy Caballero but insists there is no tension in the squad.
Mendy loves training with Cech and says that she is studying the veteran plug every day.
“Before my first match, Kepa wished me good luck. You never stop if you think you see things that I might have missed, as does Willy Caballero. It’s great that we have a united team, ” Mendy said.
“There was a unique situation here with the goalkeepers, but it was not something that influenced my decision to come to Chelsea.”
Meanwhile, Lampard praised Marcus Rashford for transcending soccer tribalism with his national movement to feed starving children.
Lampard must find a way to stop Rashford on the field today, but he hopes the 22-year-old English forward will continue his campaign outside of it.
“It has been fantastic to see young players with personality and a voice talking about the things that matter to them passionately,” said Lampard. I absolutely congratulate him on that. There is a group of players now in the Premier League talking like him. It has been something fantastic that is appreciated.
“He deserves credit for it, because even if you feel like you’re fighting for a good cause, there will be a lot of people who are quick to question or be negative.”
Cech, who operates as Chelsea’s technical advisor, has been registered as emergency coverage.
Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic are in a position to travel to Manchester as Chelsea seek a balance between the creativity of their 3-3 draw against Southampton last Saturday and the defensive solidity demonstrated in the 0-0 against Sevilla on Tuesday.
“A clean sheet always gives confidence,” Lampard said. “But it is very simplistic to say that everything was wrong because we conceded goals in one game and it is good because we did not do it in another.
“We brought in six players looking to compete in the starting eleven so I knew this would take some time.
“It is not perfect to have new players and not have training time with them. But we’ll keep working. ‘
