The proportion of people dying from coronavirus compared to other causes of death has risen in England for the first time since April, data shows.
Official figures show that the age-standardized death rate last month from Covid-19 was 12.6 per 100,000 people in England, up from 7.2 per 100,000 in August.
Separately, Nicola Sturgeon has announced a new five-tier system of coronavirus restrictions for Scotland, the measures of which will go into effect from November 2 if Holyrood approves them.
Wales is preparing to begin its ‘firewall’ lockdown today at 6pm, with enhanced coronavirus restrictions that will last until November 9, including older high school students who were asked to study at home. Indoor and outdoor domestic mixing will be prohibited.
Italy’s Campania announces tough new measures
Italy’s Campania region has announced that it will impose a lockdown to halt the rise of the coronavirus and called on the national government to do the same.
Daily cases in Italy hit a record 16,079 on Thursday after six times more since the beginning of the month.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said he wants a national shutdown that does not take into account the varying rates of infection in different regions. In large part, it has left local leaders to decide the best course of action.
Campania leader Vincenzo De Luca has already closed schools and announced a night curfew.
He announced that it will be “necessary to close everything” except essential businesses, as well as possible travel restrictions. He did not specify the date the new measures will take effect.

R number falls but is still above 1
The replication number, or R-value, of coronavirus transmission in the UK has decreased slightly, but remains above 1.
Data from the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) show that the R estimate for the UK is between 1.2 and 1.4.
Last week, it was between 1.3 and 1.5.
R represents the average number of people each person infects with Covid-19.
When the number is greater than 1, a sprout can grow exponentially.

Nottinghamshire faces the toughest measures since Wednesday
Level 3 coronavirus restrictions are expected to take effect in parts of Nottinghamshire on Wednesday.
County MPs were informed this morning that a government announcement should be made on Monday, the Palestinian Authority news agency reported.
The areas reported to be in line with Level 3 restrictions are the city of Nottingham, Rushcliffe, Broxtowe and Gedling.

Czech health minister faces call to resign for breaking rules
The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic has asked his health minister to resign after he broke strict coronavirus restrictions and visited a Prague restaurant.
Prime Minister Andrej Babis said there was no other solution than the resignation of Roman Prymula.
Mr Babis said. “It shouldn’t have happened. If we want people to follow the rules … we have to set the example.
“We cannot preach water and drink wine.”
The tabloid Blesk published daily photographs showing that Prymula also did not wear a mandatory face mask.
Restaurants are closed in the Czech Republic due to the pandemic and it was not immediately clear if the establishment was open.

Sturgeon says the UK-wide job support scheme is not enough.
The following support will be available to all companies, regardless of level:
– Companies required by law to close will be eligible for grants of £ 2,000 or £ 3,000 for every four weeks they must be closed.
