Scotland will be hit by strong winds and heavy rain over the weekend in the wake of Storm Barbara.

The Met Office anticipates that the western areas of the country will see the worst conditions on Saturday, with winds reaching highs of more than 40 mph in the morning.

A swathe of heavy rain will descend in the west around 4 a.m., passing east for the rest of the morning.

Winds will remain above 30 mph for the remainder of the weekend in the western areas before calmer conditions set in on Monday.

The conditions come after the Northeast saw heavy rain causing chaos for drivers and commuters on Thursday.

Police urged motorists in Aberdeenshire to drive with “extreme caution” after several roads were closed due to flooding.

Three people had to be rescued from a car in Angus after floodwaters engulfed the A92 near Lunan Bay.

ScotRail services in the Northeast were also severely disrupted due to conditions.

The adverse weather is understood to have come from Storm Barbara, which was named by meteorologists in Spain.

Areas of Spain and Portugal saw the equivalent of four to six weeks of rain when the storm hit earlier this week.

The Met Office has yet to issue a weather advisory on forecast conditions in Scotland over the weekend.
