Diogo Dalot made his debut for loan club AC Milan in an impressive away win over Celtic last night.
Dalot lined up on the right back in a 4-2-3-1 formation at Celtic Park. While part of the occasion was lost without supporters in attendance, this was still a challenging game for the Manchester United loan to make his new team debut.
The return to the UK was pretty good for Dalot, as Milan secured a 3-1 away win.
Dalot did well and had an interesting personal duel to try to win. Celtic had AC Milan defender Diego Laxalt on their left side, who is on loan and could play against them.
In total he managed 96 touches, more than any player on the field. Left-back Theo Hernández got closer to him with 83.
Dalot was capable of five interceptions, more than any AC Milan player.
He tried three tackles, blocked a shot and cleared a field.
From an attack perspective, Dalot could not provide a vanguard of any kind. He tried three crosses, one of which found a partner, but did not generate scoring chances.
He was involved in preparing for Milan’s first goal, scooping the ball out of defense and leaving it to Samu Castillejo, who provided the center for Rade Krunic to score.
However, on his debut, in a tough European away game, it was better not to be too adventurous and risk making a mistake.
It’s easy to forget that Dalot is only 21 and could have a great future ahead of him. United was wise to lend it rather than sell it.
This was Dalot’s first match since playing for United in Brighton in late September in the Carabao Cup.
Even that Carabao Cup match was Dalot’s first match since June.
It would be a mistake to judge Dalot negatively in this game if he had played poorly, given his lack of regular playing time.
The fact that he played well was encouraging, and it will be interesting to see how Dalot develops with regular playing time.
Part of the challenge for Dalot is staying fit. He missed the start of his first two seasons at United due to injuries.
In a week in which United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka put in an outstanding performance at PSG, Dalot will have wanted to make a good impression on his people, and he did.
If the trade to 3-4-1-2 at United becomes permanent, Dalot may be more suitable due to his ability to advance.
He didn’t really show it against Celtic, but in the coming weeks and months there should be plenty of opportunities for Dalot to show what he can do.
