Welsh supermarkets will not be able to sell items such as clothing and hardware during the Covid-19 firewall shutdown, Prime Minister Mark Drakeford said. Drakeford said it will be “made clear” to supermarkets that they can only sell products classified as “essential goods.”
He said this would ensure a “level playing field” as many retailers will be forced to close when the 17-day shutdown begins on Friday. Unlicensed grocery stores, pharmacies, and stores may remain open, but clothing stores will have to close.
Drakeford made the announcement in a committee of the Senedd, the Welsh parliament, in response to a question from Conservative Senedd member Russell George, who said it was “unfair” to force independent clothing and hardware retailers to close while similar products were out. for sale in supermarkets.
Drakeford said people had been “reasonably understanding” of the supermarkets’ limitations during the first shutdown. However, he continued: “I don’t think people will be that understanding this time, and we will make it clear to supermarkets that they can only open those parts of their business that provide essential products to people and that it will not include some of the things you mentioned. Russell George, that other people can’t sell. Therefore, we will ensure that there is a more level playing field in the next two weeks. “
Starting Friday, all leisure and non-essential retail will be closed, including clothing stores, furniture stores, and car dealerships. A full list has not yet been released. Stores that can remain open include supermarkets and other food retailers, pharmacies, banks, and post offices. Under the law, companies conducting a business that provides a mixed set of services may open if they stop performing the non-essential service.
George said: “It is deeply concerning that since we are days away from closing, we are still awaiting the publication of a full list of the types of businesses that need to be closed, as well as guidance on closing deals.
“At a time of considerable uncertainty, it is totally unacceptable, whether intentionally or not, to create even more concern and anxiety, which is sadly what this government is accomplishing.
“The people and businesses of Wales deserve better than being left in the dark. For the sake of work and people’s livelihoods, I urge the Labor-led government of Wales to heed our calls and publish a list without delay. “
Andrew RT Davies, the shadow conservative health minister, tweeted: “Power is being taken up.” He later added: “Is a Strongbow jug considered essential? What about some much-needed briefs if it catches you short? ”
