Liverpool player ratings as Fabinho shines in solid win over Ajax

Adrian 7

He tackled Gomez and then got charged a punt before settling down and making a good save from Promes point-blank. Some solid stops in the second half, but they came off with a flap at the end.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

I didn’t take a couple of good opportunities to shoot from the outside right before the break. Defensively tested but improved in that regard after the break.

Joe Gomez 8

Nervous opening as Liverpool’s remaining senior central defender, but benefited from Fabinho’s calming influence alongside him. He shone during the second half when Ajax pushed.

Fabinho 9

Two good challenges in quick succession thwarted a dangerous attack from Ajax in the first half and excellent interceptions and positioning throughout and a brilliant punt from Tadic.

Andy Robertson 8

Connected well with Mane in the overlap and a strong career created an opportunity for Salah. Strong presence at both ends after the break.

Gini Wijnaldum 7

Apparently the containment midfielder had some problems with positioning early on but gradually made his way. Better when released after Henderson’s arrival, and a strong rider in the later stages.

James Milner 6

He won two 50-50 from the start and has taken the fight to Ajax with his tackle. He seemed to tire quickly during an unusual start. Reserved and replaced late.

Curtis Jones 6

Caught in possession a couple of times, but otherwise held his ground in a busy midfield in the first half of the Champions League debut. Subtitled at the break.

Mohamed Salah 6

A couple of chances to run in defense of Ajax and bad luck with a shoe through Firmino. Subtitled.

Roberto Firmino 6

Again some nice touches but too often on the periphery. Saw a header from the corner saved the first half. Subtitled.

Sadio mane 7

He saw plenty of the ball before the break, but got little out of Schuurs, until a good spin and a missed shot created an own goal. Subtitled.

Jordan Henderson (by Jones 46) 7

He contributed more solidity to the defensive effort in midfield.

Diogo Jota (for Mane 59) 7

Purpose-tested on the left and could have benefited from a series of lightning counterattacks.

Takumi Minamino (for Firmino 59) 6

He saw a strong shot passed and it became a useful outlet when Ajax pressed.

Xherdan Shaqiri (for Salah 59) 6

Some moments of promise on the right but I did not make the most of them.

Rhys Williams (by Milner 90 + 2)

What a moment for the young man making his Champions League bow.
