Busy streets were engulfed in darkness with businesses forced to close until the lights were turned on again
Parts of Liverpool city center were plunged into darkness during a widespread blackout that lasted for hours.
Houses and businesses were without power from around 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday.
The power outage was caused by a failure in the underground power grid and affected significant areas of the Georgian Quarter, Toxteth and Dingle.
Spooky images, taken by ECHO photographer Colin Lane, captured the atmosphere on the affected streets.
On Hope Street, the only light that was emitted came from the cathedrals at both ends of the street.
A photograph on Upper Duke Street showed that the road was illuminated only by a bicycle lamp and car headlights.

The Liver Building can also be seen in the distance thanks to the lights of the clocks.
Berry Street, which is normally crowded with restaurant patrons and business noise, was also dark, lit only by the lights of St Luke’s Church.
Below are some of the images that show how the city was plunged into darkness during the blackout.
