The Parc des Princes is home to a fast forward with designs of being the best player in the world, but it is not the first time that Kylian Mbappé was overshadowed by his opposite number when Manchester United scored another famous victory.
Nineteen months ago Marcus Rashford stepped forward to score a last-minute penalty against Paris St-Germain and send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
This time it was just a group match, but the result was the same: Rashford found the far post to score a wonderful victory goal in the 87th minute and leave Mbappé frustrated again.
Solskjaer said after the game that Rashford and Mbappé were “potentially the best forwards for the next 10 to 15 years,” but how does Rashford compare to the French World Cup winner?
‘He can be world class’
At 21 Mbappé has already been the subject to a transfer of £ 165m and is fast approaching 100 goals for PSG.
He has won Ligue 1 four years in a row and has four other club medals to his credit, not to mention victory in the World Cup.
Rashford is 14 months older and not as prolific, although he has already made 40 appearances for England and has earned an MBE.
“Marcus is a good footballer and he has quality,” Solskjaer said.
“He took his goal very well and has developed to be a very good forward. Both players seem very humble and hard-working. It’s good to see them succeed.”
“Rashford can definitely be world class if he keeps improving,” former United captain Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“He needs to add that poacher element to his game. When Wayne Rooney joined United, he scored outrageous goals, he didn’t score ugly goals. He became obsessed with scoring.
“Marcus scores great goals and creates great goals – if he can create that ugly side of the game, this kid can be amazing.
“The difference between Rashford and Mbappé is that when Mbappé receives the ball I am on the edge of my seat as he prepares to go for the goal. Marcus will look up and think a little more.”
‘You may only get one chance’
Solskjaer said that this victory in Paris lacked the “euphoria” of last year’s round of 16 victory, with this game played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus.
Bruno Fernandes put United ahead from the penalty spot, recovered, before Anthony Martial deflected a header into his own net.
Mbappé’s best moment came when he got into two challenges, but saw David de Gea make a flying save to get past his shot.
And Rashford then drilled the winner with three minutes to go after failing to make the most of a clear counterattack minutes earlier.
“It’s a different feeling than the last time we won here, it’s at the beginning of the group stage, but we have beaten a fantastic team,” Solskjaer said.
“The last time it was a knockout and it was euphoric, this is sterile without the fans, but it’s still great and we deserved to win.”
“For me, both were opportunities to win the game,” Rashford said.
“As a forward, at the end of the game, that’s the mentality. You may only get one chance. It gives us all three points.”
