A man who survived a car accident in which his wife and three of their children were killed paid tribute to a wonderful family hungry for adventure.
Josh Powell’s wife, Zoe, 29, their daughters Phoebe, eight, and Amelia, four, and their six-year-old son, Simeon, were killed in a collision between their minivan and a truck.
Powell, 30, and his 18-month-old daughter, Penny, survived the crash on the A40 near Oxford and are continuing to recover.
In a statement released through Thames Valley Police, Powell said the future is uncertain and there will be many battles to come. But he said he had wonderful memories of his wife and three children.
“Before the adventure of starting a family, nobody really knows what to expect,” he said. “All the preconceptions of life and what we see in the world around us meant that life as a family man was much better than I expected.
“I was blessed with four wonderful children, whose thirst for life and hunger for adventure kept me busy but in the best possible way.
As I look to an uncertain future, I reflect on the fun we had as a family, with feelings of sadness that it was cut short.
“Phoebe was my first daughter and she was her mother’s role model but always thirsty to know more. We regularly venture out and explore the world together. She was smart and capable of great leaps of imagination; His great Lego creations are testament to this.
“Simeon was like his father, with a mischievous sense of humor and wanting to know more about the world. An avid sportsman, he was scheduled to play the first soccer game this week.
“She shared the kind hearts of her sisters and would not be happier than when she knew that they were all okay. Amelia was friendly and upbeat. His tenderness and consideration far more advanced than his years.
“Her ability to dance and express herself was a true blessing, with a lot of self-confidence. Without any practical elements, he had the most vivid dreams and imagination. “
Powell ran two companies and blogged about motherhood, while Powell is a railroad contractor.
He continued, “Zoe and I were as different as we were alike. Despite the frequent stresses this would bring, it was of immense benefit to have such different worldviews.
“Our children benefited from this by having adventures, but also the peace of mind to talk. Zoe was a dreamer. More than anything, we made a great partnership to start a family.
“I want to thank everyone who was quick to hug us to support me and Penny. There are many battles to come, and I thank everyone who has supported Penny and me thus far. “
Police said they received multiple calls from members of the public at 9.50 p.m. on Monday, October 12 after the accident involving the family’s Subaru minivan.
The HGV driver, a 56-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and has fully cooperated with their investigation, Thames Valley police said.
