Connor Goldson insists that Rangers players ignored the leaked Celtic team because they were sure it couldn’t be true.
The winner of the Ibrox match revealed that he received a text message from a friend from the south alerting him to the news that Odsonne Edouard was not playing and that young Stephen Welsh would start in the center of the back.
But he dismissed it as the usual Old Firm hysteria and insists that there is no way they can trust Celtic Park leaks because these rumors are known to circulate before games against Celtic all the time.
He admits that he has no idea how his friend in England managed to hear the team news so early, but revealed that they had entered the game still planning for Edouard and Christopher Jullien to participate.
When asked if the team had evaluated the leak as part of their pre-game discussions, he told talkSPORT: “We never. Even in our pre-game meeting, we thought Edouard would play and we thought Jullien would play. Some of us watched. the team but we really didn’t believe it, we know that an old firm can never be trusted with anything that comes out.
“One day someone gets injured and the next he’s playing. Listen, all the players want to play for an old company.
“Whether they are injured or not, they will try to get through it, so we went into the game thinking that Jullien and Edouard would play.
“To tell the truth, I went up to a coach and got a message from one of my best friends from the south who plays for Doncaster and he said Welsh was playing and Edouard was not playing. I said ‘Yeah well we’ll see when we get there.’ Obviously, when we got there, the team was sincere, but I don’t know how he knew playing in the south, but he was the only person who sent me a text message. “
Goldson doubled to earn his team all three points, but he believes there has been a big shift in the mindset of the Rangers team this season.
After last year’s victory at Celtic Park when Nikola Katic scored the winning goal, there were huge celebrations between the Rangers players and the management team.
This time it was a much quieter affair and Goldson insists it is all because they focus on silverware at the end of the season.
He has been with the club for three years after signing from Brighton, and he believes the entire team now knows that beating Celtic is no longer enough for the Rangers.
He added: “Listen, Old Firms are the most difficult games, but at the same time they are easier because you don’t have to cheer up everyone.
“You know where everyone’s mentality is, but it’s correct to say it’s the other games. This season against the other teams we have been much better. We have shown our consistency, we have gone to these places and we have been winning.
“We have to continue that. I can see that there has been a mental shift within our dressing room that winning an Old Firm game is not enough.
“Hopefully we can support him and by the end of the season we can celebrate.
“I think it’s changed. I’ve been here a few years and when I first came in, Rangers hadn’t beaten Celtic for a few years and they never got the results that we’re getting now. Now there are players here who have, who have won. some games and it’s not about beating Celtic, it’s about going and winning the trophies.
“Because some of us have been here for a few years, it’s not a new team anymore, we know what to expect and I think now we know what the league is about and it’s starting to show itself.”
