A 14-year-old boy was stabbed with a knife in the face and arms in a violent gang attack in a park.
The teenager was taken to hospital for his injuries after he was assaulted in Webster Park, near Cherryfield Drive, in Kirkby, at approximately 8.35 p.m. last night.
In a “shocking” act of violence, the young man was attacked by a group of men, police said.
A spokeswoman for the force said she suffered “stab wounds” to her head, arm and hands. His injuries were found to be superficial in the hospital.
In an image of the scene, posted on Kirkby’s news and information Facebook page, police cars can be seen lined up along the street near the park.
A 17-year-old boy was later arrested following a search in the area on suspicion of assault by Section 18 and possession of an offensive weapon.
Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien said: “It is shocking to think that a teenager could be attacked in this way in a park, and we are doing everything possible to find all those responsible and bring them to justice.

“We have made an early arrest and are conducting house-to-house investigations and looking for potential witnesses so that we can understand what happened and locate all those responsible.
“We have some positive lines of investigation, but we are still eager to hear from anyone else who may have been in the park at the time to provide information.
“No one, least of all a 14-year-old, should be the victim of a knife crime and I appeal to anyone who has seen something, or heard who could have done this, to do the right thing and come forward.”
Det Insp O’Brien added: “We dedicate significant resources and regularly conduct targeted operations in Merseyside to rid our streets of the scourge of knife crime, as well as to go to schools to educate young people.
“I urge anyone who is thinking of carrying a knife to think again. Avoid the risk of serious injury to yourself and others, and the distress that this causes to family members, and avoid spending time in police custody.

“It’s just not worth the risk. Every day we are on patrol, conducting arrest searches, executing arrest warrants, and following incidents like this, putting all our effort into arresting violators and bringing them to justice. We also look for land and houses where we believe knives have been stored and if you are involved in a knife crime, it is only a matter of time before you are injured or arrested. “
The 17-year-old was detained for interview after his arrest.
Police said investigations are underway to establish all the circumstances of the incident and to identify everyone involved.
