Wayne Rooney is at the center of a coronavirus confusion after being visited by a friend who had been instructed to get tested for Covid-19 and was later found to have the disease.
The Sun’s initial report said the former England captain, now a player and coach in the Sky Bet Championship Derby, was “furious” after infected businessman Josh Bardsley visited him at his luxurious mansion on Thursday to give him a clock.
A spokesperson for Rooney confirmed the visit to Sky Sports News, saying that “Josh and no one else told Wayne before or during that visit that Josh had been told to get tested for coronavirus.”
Rooney, who is married to television personality Coleen and has four children, was unaware of Bardsley-related Covid-related concerns, and played in Derby’s 1-0 loss at home to Watford a day after the visit on friday night.
“Had he known that Josh had been contacted by Track and Trace or tested positive, he would have refused to see him,” the statement from Rooney’s spokesman said.
“Wayne is angry and disappointed that he, his family, and his club were put in this position by someone who acted in secret and in violation of government and NHS guidelines. He is now undergoing a coronavirus test as a result of his contact Josh. “
Government guidelines say that anyone who has been in contact with a person who has tested positive must self-isolate for 14 days.
At the very least, the Derby and Watford teams, along with their support staff, are likely to be forced to test. Rooney has already indicated that he will do a test run.
Derby did not name Rooney, but confirmed in a club statement that they were aware of the reports and would follow the guidelines.
“Derby County Football Club is aware of a report in a national newspaper relating to a member of the club’s playing team who was in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19,” it read.
“Upon learning of this news, the club ensured that appropriate action was taken in accordance with the strict EFL Covid-19 protocols and the UK government guidelines, under which the club operates.
“The club will continue to adhere to Covid-19 rules and protocols to ensure the safest possible environment is provided for its players and staff.
“The club will not comment further unless an additional update is required in relation to this matter.”
