Virgil van Dijk snubs Jordan Pickford and other Liverpool moments that were lost at Everton

Merseyside derby 237 became the fifth of the last 10 to be drawn.

But while both teams once again walked away from Goodison Park with a share of the loot, there was little drama associated with one of the most exciting deadlocks in recent memory.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were disallowed by Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin before Jordan Henderson’s injury-time goal was ruled offside.

There was also the little matter of a direct red card to Richarlison for a poor tackle on Thiago Alcantara, although Jordan Pickford avoided suffering a similar fate earlier for an even worse one on Virgil van Dijk.

However, by now you will know all that.

However, a number of interesting subplots may have been missed that went unnoticed in one of the most contested derbies in years.

Too much for Kelleher

Despite the unexpected drama of it all, the game appeared to be of little interest to Liverpool’s substitute goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The aforementioned excitement left a lot for the neutrals to sink their teeth into, but Ireland’s Under-21 shooting plug was unfazed.

As the camera focused on Jurgen Klopp mid-game, Kelleher could be seen behind his manager catching up on sleep.

The young goalkeeper, at least according to the cameras, was taking an energy nap in the middle of the derby while the two teams fought on the field.

If the 21-year-old fell asleep during this match, imagine how good the game would be that puts him on the edge of his seat!

Pickford gets the message

Jordan Pickford will consider himself a lucky man.

After eliminating Virgil van Dijk with a horrendous tackle attempt early on, the England goalkeeper somehow escaped punishment.

The fact that the offside flag had been raised a second earlier seems to have been cited as the reason for escaping censorship following the knee-high pitch against the Liverpool star.

Pickford has apologized, according to Reds captain Jordan Henderson, but his initial attempts to help Van Dijk get back on his feet didn’t get much attention.

As the 75 million pound Dutchman lay on the ground to assess the severity of the incident, he could be seen pushing Pickford aside as he tried to lend a hand.

“Not!” came Van Dijk’s audible snub as he winced.

Sadio Mane was the next to arrive at the scene to make it clear that this time the help of the Everton cap was not needed.

The Senegal international, in no uncertain terms, told Pickford to stay away from the scene while Van Dijk began receiving treatment for a problem that later forced him to go to hospital for a scan.

The tough Van Dijk tried to move on, but not even the Reds star was affected by Pickford’s reckless reducer.

Klopp and Coleman have words

Jurgen Klopp often cuts an animated figure on the touchline of any Liverpool game.

Even more so when the local pride of a Merseyside derby is at stake.

But it seemed like sections of the Everton team objected to Klopp’s opposition.

As the Reds boss vented his frustrations over an incident in the second half, Klopp ended up embroiled in an uncivilized argument with Blues defender Seamus Coleman.

The Irish right-back was forced to retire in the first half by Ben Godfrey and was more than willing to interact with Klopp on the sidelines as they disagreed with a particular incident.

Anyone can guess what the disagreement was, there was a lot on the field to divide opinion, but neither was content to give ground.

It’s what makes a derby a derby, after all.
