Alan Shearer saluted Manchester United trio Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata following their resounding victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side recovered from their embarrassing loss to Tottenham before the international break with a 4-1 win at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Red Devils were left behind after just two minutes with an own goal from Luke Shaw, but captain Harry Maguire scored the tying goal midway through the first half.

Manchester United dominated the second period and scored three goals in the final 10 minutes, with Fernandes, Rashford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all scoring.

Premier League legend Shearer was impressed by United’s performance and reserved special praise for Fernandes, Rashford and Mata.

He said in Game of the Day: ‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves credit for changing teams. That team needed a change after their last performance and they played very well.

They beat Newcastle. I thought Fernandes and Mata were so smart. They stood in those little pockets, in those holes, and Newcastle couldn’t handle it.

“They were too good with the ball and showed a lot of creativity. Those two on the ball, they can punish teams and caused trouble all night.

‘Rashford was also excellent with his goal and two assists. The weight of the United pass was brilliant.

“You have to say well done to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the debacle against Tottenham.”

Fernandes, who missed a penalty before scoring for Manchester United, said: “The motivation was to win.

“Of course, I was frustrated to miss a penalty, but then we had a great reaction.

“Rash’s last goal was deserved because he played a very good game today, but this victory is for the whole team.

“It is always important to win. Having criticism is normal in football. This is a great club, we have a lot of pressure, but we are great players.

‘We are good for that. The team is united. Today is a good way to respond to the 6-1 against Tottenham.
