Alan Shearer praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for trading his team from Manchester United for their 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday.

The Red Devils manager made five changes to the team that was beaten 6-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur last time out, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Mason Greenwood eliminated for the win at St James’ Park.

Shearer said that the Manchester United team needed to renew itself after the sad defeat a fortnight ago and that Solskjaer should be commended for his management of men.

The former Premier League striker told the Match of the Day: ‘From Manchester United’s point of view, I think Ole Gunnar Solksjaer deserves credit for changing teams (after the Spurs game).

‘He had to be changed after that last performance. They played very, very well (this weekend) and absolutely beat Newcastle.

United kept doing it and running and running. They never gave up on Newcastle’s defense.

“(So) congratulations to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after that debacle.”

Shearer revealed that United needed to refresh after a difficult few months at the club.

United fell behind early on with an own goal by Luke Shaw in the second minute following a spirited counterattack by Newcastle, but Solskjaer’s side controlled the process for the remainder of the game.

Captain Harry Maguire, who was poor against the Spurs two weeks ago, tied from a corner in the first half and the Red Devils attacked Newcastle’s goal for the remainder of the game.

They finally broke through and scored three times in the final ten minutes of the game through Bruno Fernandes, who also missed a penalty in the second half, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford.

Shearer chose United midfielders Fernandes and Juan Mata as the key orchestrators of the victory in the Northeast.

He added: ‘Mata and Fernandes were so smart that they just got into their pockets in front of Newcastle’s four forwards.

If you give those two the right amount of time, they will cause trouble and they did.

“They were too good on the ball, they showed a lot of creativity that Newcastle didn’t have. Marcus Rashford was also excellent.

Shearer continued to criticize his former team in their loss to United as they barely threatened Manchester United’s goal after taking the lead in fortunate circumstances.

The 50-year-old condemned Steve Bruce’s side for his tactical game plan throughout the game.

The former Newcastle striker and manager said: ‘With Newcastle, I was really disappointed. It was a poor performance.

“ I thought the setup to soak up the pressure (after) they made the goal and just sat down (meant) they couldn’t put anybody on the ball.

“ They kept hitting long and the ball kept hitting them. I thought they were really very poor.

“The only person who should get credit for Newcastle is Karl Darlow, he kept the score low.”
