Liverpool injury update as Virgil van Dijk leaves hospital on crutches

Virgil van Dijk left the hospital on crutches with Liverpool fearing the defender will face a long season on the sidelines.

Van Dijk underwent scans for a suspected knee injury he suffered when he was the victim of a terror challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during Saturday’s Merseyside derby 2-2 draw at Goodison.

The Dutchman had a prolonged treatment on the field before limping off after just 11 minutes, and the VAR chose not to punish Pickford for the X-rated tackle given that Van Dijk had been called offside in preparation.

While there have been rumors about the severity of the damage to the player’s right knee, Liverpool are still awaiting the results of the scans.

But the Reds fear that Van Dijk, who has not missed a Premier League match since January 2018, could be out for a significant period.

The Reds are also awaiting news from Thiago Alcantara’s scanners after the midfielder was fouled late by Everton forward Richarlison, who was subsequently given a direct red card.

Thiago played the remaining minutes but complained of discomfort after the final whistle and has reportedly suffered a swelling in his right knee.

Everton vs Liverpool – Reds reaction

Both players are big doubts for Liverpool’s first Champions League group game against Ajax in the Netherlands on Wednesday.
