Manchester United leaves the defensive selection court against Newcastle United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that Harry Maguire will start if he is fit enough to travel to Newcastle United on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old Maguire was sent off in the 31st minute of England’s Nations League loss to Denmark on Wednesday night to extend his terrible start to the season and suffered a blow before his dismissal.

The United captain was lousy in Tottenham’s 6-1 win and some fans have called for Maguire to be retired at St James’ Park.

Maguire has been through a difficult personal period since he was arrested while on vacation in Mykonos in August, but Solskjaer intends to follow the defender if he recovers in time.

“We are all different people and we all deal with different things differently,” Solskjaer said. “I’m not sure how to deal with criticism. It is always me who wants to recover and prove himself.

“What you do with guys is talk to them and sit and look into their eyes and see where we go from here. Harry is a leader, he’s a captain for us, and it’s still early in the season.

“He missed the first international games, he hasn’t had the preseason he had last season, I’m sure he will recover, he has great stamina and a great personality.

“For me, I just hope he can play tomorrow because he took that hit just before the red card. I’m not sure if he will be available yet, we have training in an hour and a half.

We even gave Harry a break at one of the Carabao Cup matches [against Brighton] which we normally don’t do because we wanted him to do some training. He is convinced that he is ready to play.

“He is a boy who does not want to hide. He does not want to hide behind a red card or a bad performance, he wants to go out and prove himself. I do not doubt his resilience in that regard.”

“He’s very professional, so he wants to prepare for the national team and then it’s up to me to choose him or not and if I want to get him out of the line of fire. I haven’t considered it without him coming knocking on the door.

“I speak with him regularly and he has been very positive in his communication.”
