TThe Secretary of Transportation, Grant Shapps, announced yesterday in a statement on Twitter that Italy, the Vatican City and the microstate of San Marino would lose their ‘airlift’ status starting this Sunday, October 18 at 4 am, leaving only four restrictions-free destinations for British tourists: Germany, Gibraltar, Greece and Sweden.
Even then, several of these have exceptions: Mykonos is not included in Greece’s airlift; and Germany has added Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, much of the North of England and the Midlands to its list of high-risk destinations, meaning that anyone arriving from these destinations must take a test upon arrival.
There are several other countries with airlift status, including Cyprus, Barbados, Saint Lucia, and the Seychelles, but they all have different levels of restrictions, including pre-arrival testing and in some cases being restricted to your hotel by a certain number. days before performing a second test.
Given the few options left for British tourists, the call for tests at the airport could not be stronger.
However, there was some good news in the announcement, as Scotland and Wales joined England in lifting the mandatory 14-day quarantine requirement for arrivals from Crete, in addition to mainland Greece and all Greek islands except Mykonos.
