Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plan for Dean Henderson next season

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is seen as David de Gea’s long-term successor, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not ready to give him the promotion of his dreams next season.

Henderson has been heavily loaned at Sheffield United this season, and was second in the Premier League Golden Glove race when soccer was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Having kept 10 clean sheets in 28 league games, Henderson was one behind Burnley’s Nick Pope, and was on par with Alisson in Liverpool and Kaspar Schmeichel in Leicester City.

And the 23-year-old is ready to go on loan next season, according to the Daily Star.

The post says Solskjaer will keep faith in De Gea as his number one next season, despite some high-profile mistakes during the current suspended campaign.

Henderson, who was on the verge of a call to the England team before Covid-19 stopped soccer in its tracks, had made clear his desire to return to Old Trafford and challenge De Gea for his place on the Solskjaer side.

But he is unwilling to play the Spaniard’s second violin, so he will spend another season on loan, with a return to Sheffield United as the most likely option.

Henderson’s form has been key in helping the Blades challenge for a place in Europe next season, with Chris Wilder’s team currently seventh on the suspended Premier League table.

After such an impressive season, there will certainly be interest from other clubs in the goalkeeper, who is signed by United until the summer of 2022, although the Red Devils are expected to offer him an improved contract.

Despite Henderson’s rise to fame, legendary united goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel warned that he is not ready to be number one at Old Trafford yet.

Schmeichel said: “There is no question about Henderson’s potential, but he has played a season at a club that has had an incredible career in the Premier League.”

“But Henderson will have to show another season, like he’s just passed, and then another, and another, to convince everyone that he’s the right guy.”
