The vast majority of Essex will be subject to level two coronavirus restrictions.

As of Saturday (October 17), those living in Essex outside of Thurrock and Southend will not be able to mix with other households inland.

Follow calls from the Essex County Council on Tuesday to impose stricter restrictions on the county to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

This morning, Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed that they would grant the council’s wishes.

It has caused a lot of confusion about which areas of Essex will be restricted and which will not.

Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock are managed independently of the Essex County Council, so they will remain at Level One.

Many people in cities near London will also wonder how the change will affect them.

It was also announced today that London will also face Level Two measures.

Many cities that historically belong to Essex are officially subject to London’s restrictions. If there are any rule changes in the future, these cities will need to comply with the rest of London.

This could mean that some people are under different rules than others who live just minutes away.

It could also mean that families are divided due to different rules about social mixing.

Here are all the cities in Essex that are subject to London restrictions:

  • Dagenham
  • Bark
  • Romford
  • Rainham
  • Upminster
  • Hornchurch
  • Havering
  • Ilford
  • Enfield

What do the new restrictions mean?

When Essex moves to Level Two, the biggest change will be a ban on meeting other households inside.

The Rule of Six will remain in effect for all outdoor gatherings.

Stores, schools and universities will remain open.

Restaurants, pubs and bars can remain open, but must close at 10pm.

Gyms, cinemas and other leisure centers may also remain open.
