Police are asking for help in identifying human remains discovered at an industrial estate in Fife.
The sinister find was made on the Whitehill Road estate, Glenrothes on Sunday 27 September.
Initially there was hope for the families of the missing men Allan Bryant and Kenneth Jones who have been searching for answers for years.
But police have since informed them that the man they found is not their children and is likely dead at least two years ago.
Scottish police officers say there were “extensive” investigations to find the identity and that coroners had revealed some clues.
The work carried out, including forensic and scientific examinations by teams of specialists, confirms that the remains are those of a man of at least 35 years, potentially older, of light complexion and of around 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall.
He had lost several teeth during his life.
Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Houliston of the Scotland Police Chief Investigation Team asked people who visited the site for whatever reason to come forward.
He said, “This man’s death remains unexplained and our investigations continue to find out who he is and how he came to be on the farm.”
“There are a number of characteristics that can help us identify it. He had a surgical plate attached to his ankle and we believe it was attached to his left ankle during surgery sometime between late 1998 and early 1999.
“Investigations so far have revealed that he likely died at least two years ago.
“Officers are in the process of verifying all missing persons records in the UK, but it may not have been reported as missing and I would urge anyone who can help us identify this man to come forward.
“We are eager to speak to anyone who has used or visited the industrial estate at any time.
“There have been cases of fly tipping and young people have also gathered there from time to time over the years. It has attracted the attention of groups interested in ‘urban exploration’ who may have been on the site in last.
“I would also appeal to members of the traveling community who can help us since the site has been visited by them, as well as business owners who have used it.
“This man had a family, he was someone’s son and he could even be a father, uncle or brother. It is important that we find out who he is to bring closure to his family.
“I urge anyone who may have any information, no matter how small, to come forward. If you visited the site and saw something, no matter how long ago, then please get in touch.
“Also, if you have any photos taken on the site, give us a call. They can display vital information that will help us in our investigation. “
