Despite a promising full international debut, Reece James made unwanted history by becoming the first England player to be sent off in his first start with the Three Lions when Gareth Southgate’s men were beaten 1-0 by Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday night.

James was arguably England’s best player on the night, offering plenty of threat down the right flank as one of roughly 5,000 right-backs used by Southgate in recent weeks.

But England were always against it after Harry Maguire was sent off in the first half for a second yellow card, moments before Christian Eriksen scored the only goal of the match from point of view after Denmark received a controversial penalty.

And James added to Southgate’s troubles after the final whistle when the Chelsea youth was given a red card for dissent.

Later, footage showed James approaching the referee full time, only for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to attempt to steer the 20-year-old away from the referees.

James refused to budge and quickly received his marching orders. Just listen to the grown-ups next time, Reece.
