Boris Johnson unveiled his three-tier lockdown plan on Monday, placing areas in England at “very high”, “high” or “medium” Covid alert levels.

The latest figures from the Department of Health (released the week ending October 2) show that there are 200 Covid cases per 100,000 in Greater Manchester and 122 cases per 100,000 in Lancashire.

Within regions, areas such as Burnley (530 per 100,000), Manchester (450) and Pendle (427) are among the hardest hit in the UK.

The change would see 3,100 pubs and 475 gyms close their doors.

Adding pressure to the prime minister, Greater Manchester Labor Mayor Andy Burnham is demanding a circuit breaker shutdown with financial support for businesses.

He warned that putting the North on Level Three restrictions during the winter “would be a path to hardship for people, layoffs and business failure.”

Both regions were placed under Level 2 lockdown support on Monday, which means their Covid alert level is high.

Under Tier 2 rules, regions are prohibited from mixing with other households indoors, while the “rule of six” still applies outdoors.

Boris Johnson rejected the idea of a total national lockdown on Monday, but of rising infection rates across the country, he said “we must act now.”

Liverpool was placed in the highest tier, while Nottinghamshire, East and West Cheshire were placed in the second tier.

London is currently at a medium level, but could move to the “high” level “as soon as this week”.

Sadiq Khan has lobbied the Prime Minister to put London on a Level 2 lockdown order, banning homes from mixing indoors if cases exceed 100 per 100,000.

The mayor of London said it is inevitable that the capital will hit the “trigger point” and will be given stricter rules in “the next few days.”

When asked if he expected new restrictions to be introduced, Khan told Sky News: “In London, we don’t have good options left.”
